2009 Training Topics
Animal Intake – Learn about one of the most important phases of the emergency sheltering process, "Intake" - understand how to complete the paperwork associated with animals displaced by disaster, the proper method and application of animal photography in the digital environment and techniques of scanning different species for microchips. There will be role playing and lots of hands-on experience in this segment of the training.
Volunteer Information – For new volunteers; what they need to know about disaster responses. This segment is filled with practical ideas about all aspects of disaster deployments. Included will be information on how Noah's Wish mobilizes for deployments and responder documentation.
Returning volunteers will learn about how they can help mentor, manage and effectively communicate with convergent (spontaneous) volunteers. Information on supervisory techniques, roles and protocols will be provided to assist trained volunteers learn how to best utilize the skills of those that arrive at the disaster location without prior experience and/or training.
Horses and Poultry - Learn about animal husbandry, safety precautions and special nutritional factors about both species. This will be an opportunity for hands-on experience with both species in a controlled environment.
Safety in the Post Disaster Environment - Valuable information on personal safety issues that may be encountered during a disaster deployment.
Disaster Topic Part 1 - Floods - Vital information on what happens during a flood including; common terminology used by first responders to flooding situation and flood hazards along with much more vital information on floods.
Disaster Topic Part 2 - DECON - This will be a "wet lab' exercise. All participants will learn about Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), how to don the PPE and how to take it off without cross-contamination, cleaning and disinfection techniques and the step by step process of putting animals through decontamination.
Participants will need to bring their own goggles or safety glasses for the lab.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) 200 - This course is a requirement for all organizations that respond to disasters within the United States. It covers the Incident Command System and how agencies work together. This course is required for Noah’s Wish volunteers; if you have already taken the course please bring a copy of your FEMA certificate to training. Volunteers that have already met this requirement will participate in a different activity during the time slot. If you would like to complete this segment of the training in advance, the course is available online free of charge.
Bereavement and the Stages of Grief – Most of us know what it is like to lose a loved one; this topic will discuss the various steps in the grieving process in order to have a greater understanding of what individual disaster victim's experience. This segment will also cover where to turn when the grief process becomes overwhelming.
Pet First Aid and CPR - This course is two-in-one and will cover pertinent first aid issues and a bandaging lab, where you'll receive hands-on experience. The CPR portion will cover "rescue breathing", "cardiac/chest compressions" and choking. It will show the proper techniques from neonates to adults for dogs, cats with special scenarios too.

Zoonotic Issue - Rabies - What every volunteer needs to know about rabies, startling details on both animal and human aspects of the disease will be discussed.
Volunteer Snapshot - Our volunteers come from a vast array of exciting and interesting backgrounds in animal related fields and hobbies. Please come with your homemade or professional poster or advertisement complete with business cards attached. We will post them around the room and give everyone an opportunity to briefly introduce themselves and explain their interest to the group. This is an excellent opportunity to network with on another, anything animal related goes in this segment. Each trainee is limited to 30 seconds to present their information - that is why you need the posters. Please, posters should be no larger than legal size paper.
